A VIEW OF VIRGINIA POLITICS AND VOTING FROM INSIDE THE BELLY OF THE BEAST

  • Rust Library 380 Old Waterford Road Northwest Leesburg, VA, 20176 United States (map)

Presenter: Hon. John P. Flannery, II

John has the personal experience, having been inside “the belly of the beast,” as he likes to say, to talk about the history and practice of voting in Virginia. The talk will cover the fits and starts, the advances and setbacks, discussing who got to vote, from how Virginia treated slavery through a civil war, Supreme Court decisions before and after the war, constitutional amendments, massive resistance to segregation, and Jim Crow laws to limit and suppress the votes of Black Americans. It will also consider the amendment that gave women the right to vote, the defeat of the ERA in the General Assembly, what it takes for a woman to win an election in Virginia politics, and the identity crisis the two parties have suffered over the years.

The Hon. John P. Flannery is a former NY federal prosecutor, and former Special Counsel to the US Senate and House Judiciary Committees, run campaigns, run for office himself, and appears on network TV and radio, discussing law and politics; John lives in Loudoun County where he maintains an active law practice.
